The Gang of Five
Howdy, everyone!

As you know, the forum has been fighting spammers and bots for years. We have seen our fair share of "Custom Kitchens UK", scammy Internet hosting companies, and bots trying to send us to a business's homepage. But after fighting the tidal wave of spam for so many years, the admins had a persistent thought: what if the spammers are right? Not in terms of posting nonsense links and trying to scam our users, but in trying to make money through our unique platform?

Well, thanks to the helpful counsel of Taunt, we have finally decided to move the forum in a new direction. Please see his important post on the matter in this topic

Anyone Archive Their PM's?

Does anyone else here save every PM they get from here or is that just me?  I've been archiving PM's since I got here and I've got hundreds of them. :p I'd show some of them here to show ya what I mean, but Personal Messages are just that.....personal.  I wouldn't want to share any of my PM's without the permission of the person who sent/received them.  I don't really care but there might be others that do.  But anyways, how many PM's do you have archived (if any)?

Nope.  My inbox is 90% full, but I just delete unnecessary ones by the time it reaches that.

You're not gonna have any old memories to look back on and laugh at when you're an old fogie Petrie. :lol You gotta collect those memories when they happen otherwise they're lost forever.

I do archive my PMs. Perhaps it is the historian in me, but I am an archivist fanatic. I still have my very first emails I ever exchanged with Adam (in 2002) and even the very first I ever exchanged with another land before time fan at all (in 2000).
Because PMs are more difficult to archive and because I do prefer emails in general I would really appreciate it a lot if members sent emails rather than PMs if there is any questions.
Don't get me wrong, I really like to answer questions and I am happy to receive emails from you. I just prefer emails over PMs :)
Once my PM account is full, that will probably be the end of the story as I am not going to delete any of them. Come that day, emails will be the only remaining option (just a different link to click basically).

How are PM's difficult to archive Malte?  Just hit the "Archive" button and you'll have a nice HTML document full of color-coded PM's.  I don't like emails because I can't back them up.  Though I use an online POP mail service (Gmail and Comcast.net).  If you store emails on your computer through outlook express (I don't even know if it's called that anymore.  It was called that back in 1998.) you can save them.

I don't archive any of my messages. I keep some that I want, and delete others that I don't want.

I have to archive my messages.  I get so many of them that even if I only kept the one's I really liked I'd have to start deleting even those by now.  So many people with computer questions.....there's just no more room in my inbox!  I don't mind being so popular though. :lol  :p

I recently archived all my messages.  Now my inbox is only 5% full.  I can't wait to fill 'er up and archive 'em again!

Malte, I'm sure we spoke to one another as early as 2001.  Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought it was earlier than that.

God....has it really been THAT long?  :o

Geeze, Windows XP wasn't even fully released then.  It must've been a whole different world.  I'm sure you were speaking to each other through a Windows 2000/ME/98 computer. :p  :lol

It was definitely after my students exchange in spring 2002. We got to know each other at the N54 board where at first I mistook you for another user who was also using the name Petrie (I think you added something to the Petrie in your name to avoid confusion) and who had been harassing members (Littlefoot in particular) shortly before. I think we first met in late August or early September 2002.

I usually don't get much PMs, so i don't have to delete them either. So, you can probably say that i collect PMs. :)

What exactly do you mean by 'archiving messages'? I just leave all of mine the my inbox and very rarely delete any of them. To keep the inbox from filling up, I delete messages that been replied more than once. In other words, someone sends a message to me, I reply, then that someone replies back, and I delete the original message, because it's automatically quoted in the replied messages. Basically, I don't need to save the original message because it's already saved in another message. Thanks to this method, my inbox is currently 33% full. (without this method, I think my inbox would probably be around 40 or 50% full)

You can actually physically save the PM's to your computer.  I've only done it a dozen times or so, but if I remember correctly there's an "Archive Messages" option in your PM box.  Then just select all messages newer than 1 days, 50 messages, HTML, and an HTML document with nice color-coded PM's is sent to your email address.  Then you can save them onto your computer.

Yes, I archive all messages- personal, e-mails, and online conversations with members and administrators here. I like to be able to have references to what people tell me so that I don't have to ask for people to repeat themselves after they say something, and I can check back if I don't remember a quote clearly or just want to make sure I did. As of the time I am posting this (including what my response(s) is/are):

Administrators:
E-mails- 27 KB
Online Chatting- 272 KB
Personal Messages- 1470 KB (Due to pictures inside them)

Members:
E-mails- 7597 KB (Due to pictures inside them)
Online Chatting- 1551 KB
Personal Messages- 5684 KB (Due to pictures inside them)

Both (With at least one administrator and one member at the same time):
Online Chatting: 79 KB

Now, a few chats, personal messages, and e-mails have been lost, due to some technical difficulties with my computer, though this can be said with very few of them, as I have more than 95% of them all.

I don't "archive" my pms. I actually make a folder for the pms that mean something to me. I think I should find a way to get the messages out of my pm box though, just so I can receive more if needed be. :)

Nevermind, I just did that. And I read what it meant too. Thanks for making this topic lbtlover!  :D

Not usually, I just delete the least important ones.  I'd probably archive messages if it were more of a natural process like E-mail, but the PM system is just a pain to organize.  I don't like using it that much.
