The Gang of Five
Howdy, everyone!

As you know, the forum has been fighting spammers and bots for years. We have seen our fair share of "Custom Kitchens UK", scammy Internet hosting companies, and bots trying to send us to a business's homepage. But after fighting the tidal wave of spam for so many years, the admins had a persistent thought: what if the spammers are right? Not in terms of posting nonsense links and trying to scam our users, but in trying to make money through our unique platform?

Well, thanks to the helpful counsel of Taunt, we have finally decided to move the forum in a new direction. Please see his important post on the matter in this topic

Being a video gamer myself, I was wondering about teh rest of you guys and gals who might be interested in a little playtime of the virtual variety! ;) Be it arcades, consoles, PC, handheld, modern, retro or otherwise, whad'dya seen in a game and what d'ya like? (and dislike obviously).

I play games nearly every day, mostly of the console and handheld variety, though I use the computer occasionaly. I do love retro games, and play the Nintendo Entertainment System and the Super one, along with original game boy games. For the game boy ones though, I usually use a game boy advance SP, as my original game boys have served me well throughout their lives. They can still work, but I've given them the remainder of their lives to play out in peace.

I haven't been to an arcade in a very long time, as I use arcade emulators nowadays. When I did visit them though, I played multiplayer adventures like X-Men and Dungeons and Dragons: Tower of Doom. I played as Dazzler and the Cleric respectively.

I play a variety of games, but I prefer ones with unlimited decision time to make a move, in other words, traditional and tactics role playing games. Some of which have timed hits (doing certain actions at certain times for a critical effect) but they're fun to do anyway.

I'd actually like to try a game via internet (I've never done so far, with the only exception of chess). However, I'm more into strategy games like Cossacs, American Conquest etc.

Is there anyone around here who loves strategy games such as Cossacks, American Conquest, Gettysburg etc.?

But I was not so much thinking of the kind of games where you are one character running, jumping, hiding, shooting etc. but more of a strategy game where you have to build armies, to form alliances, built up your infrastructure, lead the armies into battle etc. In those games the AI is usually very small (even on high level) and if at all the computer beats you through masses rather than tactics.

Those games I mentioned are similar to Command and Conquer or Age of Empires, but they have less of the "rioting mob running to the middle of the screen trying to kill everything that is moving without any tactic or strategy effect".

Age of Empires II is the only strategy game I've played, and is the only offline computer game I play. It works online, but I've never used that feature. That is also the online computer game I have that requires a disc to install and isn't downloaded.

I like the strategy genre, despite not so much as some others. I spend the first bit of time making a lot of walls, then proceed to towers that fire arrows. I rarely make units that are machines like trebuchets, and instead prefer mounted and long range fighters for battle. For those that know my RPG preference of being a healer this is no surprise, but I make many, many healing units, which, in Age of Empires II, are Monks for being on foot, and Missionaries which are mounted. I like to keep my units healed rather than making many new ones due to the old dying. I am also a big fan of converting enemy units with those healing units, their secondary feature. Although, by using the Heresy upgrade, units die instead of being converted. When the enemy does that, yeah, they lose their units, but they keep me from using them against them.

I prefer fast moving, long range, though less protected units so I can escape easily and fight from a safe distance. It is a long time before I launch a siege. Walls are always a first priority, and I want many, if not all, defensive upgrades for both the walls and buildings, and the units. Making units cause more damage is very low on my priority list.

Tactics RPG's remind me a bit of Strategy ones, although there is that unreal element of being able to take an eternity to choose a move, something not available in any realistic strategy game I've ever seen. Having only so much time to make your move makes me a bit more nervous, and increases my chance of making an error, though I still play things like that at times regardless. How else can I improve?

Any particular game series people are into? My personal favs are:

Sonic the Hedgehog (past and present)
Devil May Cry
Resident Evil
Metal Gear Solid
Final Fantasy
The Legend of Zelda

My favorite games series would have to be:
Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy Tactics (not as much Crystal Chronicles)
Lunar
PokÈmon (not as much Mystery Dungeon)
The Legend of Zelda
Megaman (not as much Battle Network, Starforce, or Zero)
Super Mario (mostly just the RPG's like Legend of the Seven Stars and Paper Mario)
Kingdom Hearts
and a few others

Can't say I'm much of an online gamer but then again, I've never really had the equipment or the net capacity to do it.

Same here. I can only play 2D ones, and I play Pokemon World Online. My family can only use 200 megabytes a day for usage, or else our internet connection starts malfunctioning. Just loaded a page of text uses so many kilobytes. We have unlimited uage from 3-6 AM, which is the only time we can use things like XBOX Live. Still, I bought an XBOX Live card just recently, as, little sleep or not, I do intend to play Final Fantasy XIV, which is usable online, when it is released.

Any games people prefer to be seen still on the shelves of a store or ever bought a game that is about as much fun as watching a fly on the wall?

Aye. Yo Bro for the Turbo Express. You play as a teenager on a skateboard shooting alien plants with a slingshot. You have no other options besides firing little whatever-they-are from it. The game had zero fun factor for me whatsoever. There are no in-game instructions, no mission objectives, no anything. I have played it for hours shooting plants and never proceeded in the storyline. Oh wait, there isn't one! There is no opening scene, you just appear on a skateboard and start shooting. The instruction manual may have explained some things, but I got it used and didn't get one. Still, such deficiencies need to be taken into account. Who knows? Maybe the manual explained the whole thing. Still, I believe all games should have some sort of in-game tutorial/instructions in case there is no physical manual.

I was gonna put this as a poll but I thought it would be a waste of a topic but can I get a show of hands from all y'all gamers out there...what console(s) do you own or what do you prefer playing games on?

I answered the systems owned thing in a poll in the gamer section, but as for my prefered playing preferences, I'd say the PlayStation (original), PlayStation 2, XBOX 360, Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, and the Dual Screen, or "DS" for short. I use my computer gaming-wise only for PokÈmon World Online, and the occasional use of Age of Empires II.

As a Cube owner, you've gotta tell me you've got Smash Bros Melee! Please enlighten me and tell me you have (or to anyone who's played it at least). That has to be my favourite beat 'em up ever! :D

Oh...and on that note... LINK RULEZ! No contest! :p :P: :lol :DD

I have that. I prefer Jigglypuff and play as no one else so I can retain the skill of a single character and not get mixed up with different styles. Many can master many, but I would get overwhelmed trying to learn how to play as multiple characters. In games, I am a big fan of causing status ailments and great movement capability, and Jigglypuff's sleep technique and small body provides those respectively. With my style of gameplay, raw power is of little interest. And yes, Link is a very good character to play as. Stronger than many, faster than many, very agile, a good long-range attack, he is certainly the favorite of numerous people I know.

Quite an interesting thread. Glad I found it. Later!

i love strategic games like age of empires and star wars galactic battle grounds (the star wars equivalent of age of empires). i like putting myself in the worst sorts of conditions and then making my way up using strategic maneuvers (sending in 2-3 men at a time instead of sending an entire army)

I also enjoy playing strategy games. It is perhaps one of my most favorite kinds of games. Of all the strategy games I have, my favorite would definitely be the Civilization game series. I have played Civilization 3 (the complete edition) and Civilization 4 (along with the expansion packs Warlords and Beyond the Sword).

I like a blend of different types of games.

Although I don't like turn-based RPG games, there are a couple games I have enjoyed playing playing in the past that are turn-based: the classic Pokemon games (Red and Blue) and Digimon Digital Card Battle. I've also played a Yugioh game that was turn-based as well, but I never got too far in that.

I do enjoy platformer games, such as Spyro and Scaler, as well as casual games like Bejeweled 2 and Blaster Ball (can't remember what version because it's been years since I've played it), and strategy games once in a while such as checkers and 3-D Logic.

I like PC games like Halo and Zoo Tycoon, console games like Dino Crisis and Zoids Battle Legends (haven't played it in years), and retro games like Super Mario Brothers and Super Mario World.

There's a lot more games I've played and liked to play than I have mentioned here.

I absolutely love gaming! I've loved it ever since I played Treasure Mountain on my old computer and have since evolved. I own too many consoles to remember, but I am almost always on either my Xbox 360 Live or Wii. My gaming calling is definitely fighting games. I'm good at shooters as well, but fighting has always been my true niche. I don't know why, but give me a fighting game and I go completely nuts and obliterate anybody I play. My all time favorite fighting game has to be Mortal Kombat. I've loved it ever since I was five and continue to enjoy it today. I also enjoy Tekken, Soul Calibur, and Street Fighter.

I pretty much like just about any game type after fighting, shooters being my second favorite.

I like best rpg's, some rts's, and a few other genres of games.   some puzzle games, some casual games perhaps.  a few fps games.  Adventure games, especially ones with lots of comedy in them like Sam and Max hit the road, day of the tentacle.

The rpg's I dislike are those that often have random encounters.  Ever x number of steps poof a monster or a group appears, you are yanked out of the game and into another screen, battle them, then once the battle is over, if you win, poof, you're back where you were.
