I’m a hopeless klutz when it comes to lab work myself (please don't misinterpret that as me saying you are!). On my first day of Microbiology lab, when the class was practicing preparing bacterial slides, I managed to scald my hand with a wire sampling loop (I don’t remember exactly what the tool was called
) that I had just sterilized in a Bunsen burner. The burn wasn’t that bad, but the next day in the lecture hall, the professor came up to me and offered to exempt me from lab work, basing my grade entirely on what I learned from the lectures. I immediately and appreciatively accepted. In retrospect, it was a little sad that I didn’t get a chance to see all of those fascinating microorganisms I learned about under a microscope, but at least I still have all my fingers and hair follicles today.
