The Gang of Five
Howdy, everyone!

As you know, the forum has been fighting spammers and bots for years. We have seen our fair share of "Custom Kitchens UK", scammy Internet hosting companies, and bots trying to send us to a business's homepage. But after fighting the tidal wave of spam for so many years, the admins had a persistent thought: what if the spammers are right? Not in terms of posting nonsense links and trying to scam our users, but in trying to make money through our unique platform?

Well, thanks to the helpful counsel of Taunt, we have finally decided to move the forum in a new direction. Please see his important post on the matter in this topic

Minna got slowly to her feet. the boulder was almost as big as she was, she shuddered to see how close it had come, any closer.. and that would have been the end of both of them.. " thanks.. She said , nuzzling Lucien " Now we need to keep going, I'm guessing the third wave will come from the eastern side and the last from the west.

Ku'ux came to the wall, just as the ice attack happened, moving to duck for cover to avoid being stuck by the icey blasts.

He glanced up again, only to see the volley of arrows coming down, doing what he could to avoid them, remaining in cover only for two arrows to strike him the shoulder.

They remained within him as he stood up again, being rather durable as it were, reaching to pull the arrows, dropping down to the ground with a snort as he knocked a ladder down off the wall as the siege towers were advancing towards the wall.

He looked to Adykon "How long can this city hold out for? It looks like the assulting party isn't going to let up anytime soon"

Eternion too had just had the misfortune of being the target of quite a large boulder... that happened to be on fire. He looked up to see the firey ball hurtling towards him like a metorite, and his eyes widened.

He took a few steps to the right, and watched the boulder smash into the ground, sending up embers and broken rock in all directions, some of which bounced off his scales.

'Was beginning to wonder when they would start using fire,' he said, shaking his head. A bit of rock had struck him across the snout, which certainly didn't help things at the moment for the gray dracon. Eternion was, however, partially glad that it was his nose that had been struck, and not some other place... since he was wearing no armor what-so-ever.

However, his eyes continued to stare up into the skies... not truly out of fear for another boulder to come his way, however likely that was... but because of what he saw flying in the skies.

It stood out amongst the dark clouds, a seemingly glowing figure of green, long and striking... and odd bird, unlike anything Eternion had ever seen. He shook his head, surely he was jsut imagining things? He looked up again, and the bird was gone.

He decided not to mention it to the others, considering that they already thought him a little bit strange.

Ilsa continued flinging spells at the mage, who seemed to not be bothered by anything she was doing " They're toying with me.." She thought  This was a fine way to spend the first day of being married.. but there would be time for regret later.. if she survived..

"Argh! Blast this! Where are our mages!" Adykon was NOT happy right now. This was the second time the enemies had been able to use some kind of mage against them, and they were unwilling or unable to respond in kind, save for what the party itself had. This was madness!

Deep in his palace, the king of Minbenthac was busy working on the city's defenses with Kluthu, his archmage. Generals and senior officer staff were rushing about with updates on the situation.

"Sire, we are surrounded on all four sides, the main roads leading to the city are occupied, and we estimate that they have dozens of siege weapons to be used against us."

"Tell me something I don't know, Kluthu." The king replied, slumping into his golden throne.

"Well, sire, there's the matter of the three dragons. I have detected a red, a blue, and a green in command of three of the four enemy armies. Each one is a mature adult and is quite dangerous in magic and in their breath powers."

"Ah yes, dragons. I've seen lots of- DRAGONS?!"

Taken aback by the king's reaction, Kluthu's mutable skin color rapidly changed from red to green. "Yes, sire. Dragons. I detected them a couple of hours ago. The enemy hasn't used them yet."

"By the gods! We've got to DO something about this! Where are the royal dragonslayers?" Minbenthac's royal dragonslayers were a powerful team of three brothers, each of whom had a similar name. There was Picus, the swordsman, Procas, the axeman, and Protagoras, the Spearman. Each of their weapons were enchanted to do extra damage to dragons, and their armors were enchanted to be resistant to the elemental attacks which dragons were known to unleash.

"Not to worry sire, They took off for the dragons not long after I first detected them. I imagine Procas must be finishing one of them off by now."

At that very moment, a few kilometers from the city walls, A sword, and axe, and a spear lay littered among charred dracon bones, each broken skeleton dressed in the tattered remains of what once had been proud armor. The shadow of three dragons passed over the remains of Picus, Procas, and Protagoras, one of whom was busy cleaning the last of the meat from the bones of the latter's ribcage. It was clear that the plans of the royal mage were defunct, to put it mildly.

Arianne arrived where the attack was now happening, Near Margas and Ilsa. - "I hope they manage to do their job, or we all be in problems." - She said as she was able to dodge an incoming ice attack.

Eriol was in another side of the main wall, not knowing Arianne was nearby. - "As long as I evade those magical twerps, I should be fine." - he muttered as he successfully aimed and fired with his crossbow at the closest enemy soldiers coming from the incoming assault towers. - "I need a way to stop or delay those towers... that way we can gain some time."

Far away from the battlefield, the archmage who had taken a liking to Adykon was deep in meditation. The magic surrounding her domicile was still holding, despite the siege force that Dememoras had sent. Her white palace was sheathed in a wavy field of blue light, which, despite its transparency, was strong enough to keep out boulders, fireballs, battering rams, and the repeated blows of swords, daggers, axes, hammers, spears, pikes, lances, maces, clubs, and whatever other weapons Dememoras's forces could think to muster.

He had killed her husband. After the debacle with the Lost city, Dememoras personally blew him up. It wasn't fair. That statue was the cause of so much pain, and now, it was the personal prize of the Dark Master, wherever he was.

The archmage was sitting in her room with her eyes closed and her legs crossed. She was known by many titles, both real and assumed, but whose real name was Aerta, derived from the draconic word meaning "celestial." The mage was doing more than meditating, she was exploring. Yes, exploring. Her body was in one place, but her soul was elsewhere, exploring the astral plane, listening to the music of the spheres, and dancing in the wilderness of magic.

There was a purpose to this. While Aerta loved to frolic in the magical realms, she also knew that there were serious reasons to be there. On the astral plane, one could see all the energy of the universe, including magical energy, such as the kind that tended to be thrown around a major battle. Observing the battle of Minbenthac from her place of safety, Aerta was a witness to history in the making.

High in the dark clouds that hung over the city like a prophecy of things to come, there was another witness to history. A green phoenix, feathers that glowed a vibrant and earthly green from head to tail. Large wings spread either side of her catching the flowing breeze as she soared through the clouds with such ease, her piercing gaze watching the events unfold below.

However, she was not merely here to watch... She had come from afar, with a cart that carried something that could aid the city in this... this darkest hour.

But she was too late, and now the city lay under siege from the forces of Dememoras. The cart, pulled by a single mule, was now stopped in its tracks... with nothing but a kobold to defend it.

She had ordered him to stay hidden until she returned... but she knew Klebol well, and if there was one thing he wasn't good at... it was keeping still.

She had to find a way through, quickly.

Aerta could see all things in the battle, in as far as the astral plane gave her "eyes" to do so. Only the most skilled of archmages could detect her presence, although she could see all, including...

"Dragons! Oh gods, they're holding them in reserve. Minbenthac could crack like a nut if they attack. I've got to warn Adykon!" thought the sorceress. By thinking in such explicit terms, Aerta made a terrible mistake, for the Astral Plane was not a private network. Her spirit appeared as a white form on a white background, punctuated only by the faint dots of magical energy visible on the material plane, where the battle was taking place.

Another was on the plane as well, watching the battle with great interest, but his spirit was not so clean. Normally, he remained hidden while in this realm of existence, but for now, he decided to drop the disguise. Out of nowhere, unseen even by the archmage Aerta came a black ooze, pouring out of a "hole" in the plane. With no sound, odor, or any other physical signs, she didn't see it. By the time it had shaped itself into something else and solidified, it was too late.

Sensing another presence with her, Aerta spun around to find

"Dememoras!"

"Hello, my dear. I trust you are enjoying the show?" This form of his was not much larger than a big Dracon male, but it was a good deal larger than her. The pitch-black, seven horned creature with a long spiked tail had manifested in a "scaled down" form his appearance here, in as far as anyone could travel to this non-physical plane. This was his Avatar here, his unreal appearance on a network that spanned all the planes and realities. Aerta's blank white form was her's, although one could tell she was female due to the general shape of the body it took on.

Dememoras sounded softer, calmer, almost seductive. A far cry from the roaring volcano that his voice resembled in his own plane or the material one.

"Have you come to mock me, Demon?" Aerta spat.

"Oh no, I'm here for the same reason as you are, to witness the first day of my glorious empire. Look well, female, for it is history in the making. A grandeur beyond your meager comprehension, the most important day in the history of-"

"Shut up! Just shut it! I can't let you distract me!" Aerta moved away, flying through the plane, heading towards the energy signature she knew was Adykon's. As with many females of her kind, the archmage was graceful, and cut through the plane's fabric like a skilled diver would pass through the water. Unfortunately, she failed to realize the true nature of her foe.

"Going somewhere?!"

"How did? I just- just left you behind me!"

"So you did. And I followed."

"How'd you get in front of-"

"In front of you? Silly female, there are some things about me you will never understand, such as how I can move along all the lines of this plane like moving from a vanishing point to anywhere else in the plane at will."

"What are you? Vanishing? What are you talking ab-"

"Enough chat. Time to get down to business." With that, several tentacles emerged from his chest, each with a sharpened tip. "You know that I can absorb energy, Aerta."

"No..."

"And that the purer the energy, the more of it I can use."

"No!"

"And there is no energy in the whole cosmos as pure, or as sweet as that of a SOUL!"

"NOO!!!"

"Your soul is sweet, very sweet. It brims with the force of magic, the power of the arcane, the very essence of life itself! Come to me!!!."

"NOOOOO!!!!!!!"

Scrambling to literally save her soul, Aerta cut the connection to the Astral plane, and suddenly awoke in her room, gasping and sweating. Lying on her back on the heavily carpeted floor, she was hardly able to keep calm. Her part of her body was twitching, from her head to tail to toes. Still shaking, the archmage calmly stood up, only to feel a queasy feeling. Falling down again, she could no longer suppress the urge to vomit.

"Huuuurrgggh!"

It was a physical reaction to her mental state. Dememoras nearly absorbed her soul into his being. Aerta was within a hairsbreadth of being lost in his darkness. Way too distraught to continue working her magic at the moment, she could only lie down on the rug, curled up into a ball, shivering in the darkness as the enemy outside continued to pound on her palace's defenses.

'Damn it, damn it all,' Eternion shouted, ducking blasts coming from what seemed all directions. 'Bloody hell, this is cowardice at its best. Nothing but cheats, and now there's a shard of ice in my arm.' He plucked it out and threw it to the ground. It gave a slight hiss, and then was gone.

He looked up, watching the skies for more attacks, and he saw it again...

The bird. No, it was something more... his eyes widened, his mind afire. Blood and blazes, it couldn't be!

The green phoenix dove like a glowing green meteorite, and drove its long talons deep into one of the enemy mages... and as quickly as she had appeared, she was gone, leaving nothing more than a single feather and the mages staff behind as a sign of her appearance.

She carried the burden high into the sky as if it were nothing, and her eyes stared coldly. 'You will do nicely,' she spoke in a dark feminine voice that seemed to echo slightly.

And then the phoenix let go.

Adykon looked up and saw the great bird. "What in blue blazes?! Vespion, do you know what that thing was?"

"No, I don't. I just hope its on our side. Toby, can you fly up there and-'

"Already on it!" The young dragon replied, climbing higher and higher into the air. He had never seen a creature like this one either. "Who are you?" He demanded of the great bird, not knowing whether this was a friend or foe.

'Well, aren't you a cute little thing,' the green phoenix replied as she hovered in the air, her massive wings circling to keep her in place... but her black beady eyes always on Toby. 'My name is Tahlia Irrelianova, princess of the earth and daughter of Orphia Irrelianova. Do not worry yourself, for I am a friend.' She tilted her head at the dragon curiously. 'Though, who might you be, young sky king?'

Down below, Eternion continued to gape up at the pair. 'My gods... I thought I'd never see the day. A living, breathing, earth phoenix...'

This day had just gotten that much weirder for the gray dracon.

"My name is Toby. Just Toby" The little red dragon replied as he hovered in midair. "Are you fighting to defend this city, or destroy it?" Toby doubted that he could take on the Earth Phoenix, at least, at his young age. Fire could do serious damage to earth, he knew, but he was simply too young to beat her.

Vespion could take her on, if he was at full power... which he most certainly was not after taking all those injuries from earlier. If she attacked, it would be quite hard for the party to stop her.

Adykon looked up, and really, really hoped that this bird was on his side. Yes, it had come to this. In a final absurdity, he was pinning his hopes on birds.

'I have never been much for fighting,' Tahlia replied, looking back down at the city below her, still hovering. 'But, to answer your question directly, I would be considered an ally of your cause, and not an enemy of it.'

She glanced back up at Toby, and her eyes seemed to glow a rich white. 'Perhaps you can help me. I have come at the behest of an old ally who I believe now rules this city. I  was to deliver something that could aid the cause, and yet I was too late... as fate would have it so. I am hardly surprised, but now I am left without a way to bring a cart into the city, and it is most crucial I do so... and soon, it would seem.'

"A cart? A CART?!" Toby replied, incredulous. "Sure, I can move a cart. Just tell me where it is and I can pull it in. What could possibly be so important in cart that could change the fate of this city?"

Aerta lay on the carpet, wearing only her loincloth, and even this was more than usual for her while she was in this room, alone. Her resolve was badly shaken by the events of the last ten minutes. The once-confident sorceress and archmage was now reduced to a shivering mess. She had to warn them. She had to... but how? If she tried that again, Dememoras might claim her. Aerta had been lucky once, but a second time?

'The fate of the world can be found in the most unusual of places sometimes,' Tahlia replied with a slight chuckle. 'Come, follow... we have hidden the cart quite far from this siege as to keep it safe. The device is quite heavy, but I am certain it will be worth the trouble,' she continued as she swooped down beneath the clouds once more.

In the distance, Klebol could see the distinct green ember of the earth phoenix Tahlia. 'Mother!' He cried, dancing atop a small hill in excitement. 'Mother returns! Mother returns! The world is saved! Kleeeee!'

Toby followed the earth phoenix to where she had hidden the cart, or at least, to where a cart was hidden. The young dragon wasn't sure of anything... but Dememoras was! He knew what Tahlia was planning to do, and he knew that it wouldn't be enough.

Yes, the dark master was still watching over the battlefield. Watching and waiting from the astral plane...
