Shrinking images?

Hi, i am currently looking for a new avatar and/or signature picture, but everything i find is too big to be added here. So, i was wondering how to shrink the images to the required size? I think you save the image and bring it into paint, but that's all i know.

In most programs you will find a link titled "image size" under the header "image". There you are allowed to change either the percentage size of a picture or you can enter the number of pixels you want to have as the height / width of a picture.

The only free thing that comes with windows that can shrink images is paint.  Simply open the image you want to shrink in paint, hold down the CRTL key and press W, then resize it to about the size of an avatar.  Unfortunately, there is no pixel size setting in paint.  You'll have to approximate.

I have one I got free from microsoft's site that seems to shrink images fairly well.    I've used it a few days.  Not sure if it is what you are looking for.  It's some sort of powertoy program.  

You can click on the photo to look at it in the regular windows image view thing, then right click on it if you have the resizer installed and it should show up on a list of options.

It should be the fourth choice under print.  You can choose advanced and choose the pixel sizes and it'll shrink it down to that.  You can put in whatever sizes Petrie allows for avatars on here.  

Not sure how it compares to other methods.

Thanks, Kor. But when i went to the advanced options and picked custom, it says "fits a (number) by (number) screen. Is that the pixel size?

Yes.  I learned a bit by experimenting.  

I'm sure Petrie, or one of the other admin can tell you good numbers to put into those to boxes for an avatar and another set, if needed, for a signature.

Anyway, if you find an image you like I'll gladly shrink it for you.  It takes like 10 seconds with photoshop and photoshop is the only program I've ever used that creates a "clean" resize.  Here's an example.

Resized in paint, the board, or other cheap third party application:

As you can see, when an image is resized to the size it needs to be using paint, automatically by the board, or another cheap program, the image becomes blurry.  I have no clue why that is, but I've never been able to find a program that doesn't do this except for photoshop.

The photoshop image is what's called a "clean" resize, meaning that it didn't blur or lose quality.  All it lost was size in pixels.

Thanks for offering such help. I'm not going to change my avatar yet, but when I do, I can just ask you to shrink the image I'd like to have, and I know it won't take long. I already know which image I'd like to have, by the way.

That XP tool resizer thing is awesome.  Sig pictures really shouldn't be much bigger than 300 (height) by 400 (width).

Recently on another Forum I have a Signature that is barely over the limit of the allowed Signature sizes but they disabled it anyway. However i am allowed to resize it and then ask for it to be enabled again, but once i used that image resizer tool, i have no clue on how to put the resized image in my signature. (If anyone wants to know, this Forum does not have a browse button for Signatures, And also, sorry if i'm asking in the wrong place for help on Signature images, I'm just not smart about images, but i'm getting there.)

There are lots of experts on that here who can help you.   Landbeforetimelover is one resident expert I think.  Likely Petrie is another.  Running a forum he must know many things.   You can ask them or here for help.  I'm sure folks here would not mind helping you.

I had the same problem (as I'm sure pretty much of you are aware of : )

After some great help, from several members, I used rezise tool in Photoshop, also cropping un-neccesary parts of the picture, and then uploaded to GoF trough my Photobucket account. That worked wonders!

Though, my result maybe didn't came out the best. heh...

No offense, but your avatar looks a little warped.  You should have constrained proportions when resizing the image and just changed the larges size down to 120px.  That would have maintained a healthy ratio.
