I wish he’d tell me before he runs off like this, Guido thought as he pushed aside some ferns. He had gone looking for Pangaea after noticing that he was gone, and while not an especially good tracker, he had determined that his friend had been headed for the northern border of the Great Wall. Guido had just reached the edge of the treeline below the slopes that led up to the base of the Wall.
“Aw, great,” Guido groaned, seeing the climb ahead of him, “I hate walking uphill.” He cupped his hands to his mouth. “Hey, Pangaea, are you up there?!” he shouted.
Guido didn’t get a response, but just then he heard what sounded like panicked screaming in the distance.
“Pangaea, is that you?” he called. Truthfully, it didn’t sound like Pangaea, but Guido decided that he’d better investigate. Fortunately for him, the voices seemed to be coming from his left rather than ahead of thim, so he didn’t have to do any climbing; he just had to walk along the base of the hills. He hurried in the direction of the continuing cries, hoping that whoever was yelling wasn’t in trouble.
Unfortunately, when Guido looked around a boulder and discovered the source of the screaming, he saw that there was trouble. Two egg stealers were racing down the slope, a pair of all-too-familiar-looking fast biters hot on their heels. Worse, he saw an unmistakable small red shape not far ahead: Pangaea!
Guido shrieked in alarm and, without thinking, ran to intercept the chase. He could see that the egg stealersóand the fast biters, who were readily keeping pace with themówere rapidly gaining on Pangaea. The red glider appeared to be heading towards a large, uptilted rock sticking out of the side of the hill. Guido guessed that Pangaea was going to use it to make a leap into the air in order to glide away.
“Run, Pangaea! Run!” Guido screeched madly. “Go for that rock! Jump! Glide! Hurry!”

The moment he realized that his quarry was heading towards the rock, Screech had known what he was planning to do. “Not this time!” he roared, his rage and determination stimulating a burst of adrenaline that allowed him to pick up even more speed.
If only these idiot egg stealers would get out of the way! Screech thought angrily, snapping his teeth at the tail of the one in front of him. This elicited a terrified yelp from the egg stealer, and, fortuitously for Screech, apparently motivated him to both speed up and dodge to the side. Screech grinned at his luck and set his sights back on the glider, who by now had almost reached the rock.
--------------------------------------------------
Pangaea thought he heard Guido yelling off to his side some distance away, but couldn’t risk taking his eyes off the path ahead of him to turn his head and look. He had to time his leap perfectly for the best possible chance of escape. As he reached the rock, he flicked his wings open to catch the air. As his foot hit what he guessed to be the edge of the rock, he sprung into a leap, spreading out his leg feathers for maximum lift.

Screech’s fury flared up again as he saw the glider rise into the air. “OH NO YOU DON’T!” he screamed. Upon reaching the rock himself, he too took a flying leap into the air, stretching his arms out as far as he could…and wrapping his clawed hands around the glider’s wings.
